Which Way is Up? The Church of 2025 and Beyond

Writer: Deborah BellDeborah Bell

In a world that is rapidly changing, the Church must ask itself a fundamental question: Which way is up?

The answer is not found in cultural trends or popular strategies but in the divine blueprint given to us in the book of Acts—the model for a Spirit-filled, covenant-driven church. Jesus not only established this model but also promised even greater things (John 14:12) through the power of the Holy Spirit.

An essential foundation for a thriving, Spirit-filled church is FELLOWSHIP—a covenant relationship among believers that mirrors the love, unity, and power of the early church.

The modern church often confuses socialising with fellowship. Socialising creates surface-level connections, but true fellowship is a covenant—a deep, spiritual joining of hearts and lives.

Acts 2:42-47 paints a picture of a church devoted to one another, sharing life, breaking bread, and meeting needs selflessly.

"All the believers were together and had everything in common... They continued to meet daily in the temple courts and broke bread from house to house." (Acts 2:44-46)

Fellowship is not transactional; it’s relational. It’s not about what we can get, but about giving ourselves to one another in Christ. It’s in this sacred commitment that the church truly grows—not just in numbers but in depth, maturity, and power.

The Covenant of Fellowship

Covenant fellowship is not about convenience; it is about commitment. In a culture of individualism, many seek community only when it’s easy or beneficial. But true biblical fellowship requires devotion, sacrifice, and accountability—qualities that transform individuals and the church as a whole.

True fellowship means:

  • Sharing life together – Not just attending services but walking through life’s joys and struggles as one body (Ephesians 4:16).

  • Spiritual accountability – Like Nathan confronted David (2 Samuel 12), real fellowship allows us to speak truth in love.

  • Integration, not isolation – The enemy seeks to break fellowship because where two or more are gathered, God’s power is present (Matthew 18:20).

Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us:

"Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another."

Restoration Through Covenant Fellowship

The early church flourished because fellowship was at its core. They understood that unity in the Spirit was their strength.

If we want to experience the power of God as they did in Acts, we must prioritise fellowship as they did in Acts.

This week, ask yourself:

  • Is my fellowship built on covenant love or convenience?

  • Who in my spiritual family needs encouragement, prayer, or support?

  • Am I actively contributing to my church community or simply receiving?

The Holy Spirit is calling the church back to authentic, Spirit-led fellowship. It’s time to reconnect, recommit, and rediscover the power of being one body in Christ.
