Have you ever stood in front of a garden in winter? Everything looks lifeless, yet beneath the surface, life is quietly waiting for the right season to burst forth again. Your prayer life might feel the same way right now – not dead, just dormant.
The Silent Seasons
We've all experienced those times when praying can feel like simply speaking to the ceiling rather than truly connecting with God. It might seem daunting to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17) when you struggle to maintain even five minutes of concentrated prayer.
King David, known as a man who pursued God's heart, faced similar challenges. In Psalm 13:1, he cried out, "How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?" If David could experience feelings of isolation, it is ok for us to recognise our own struggles as well. David had a heart after God and quickly sought to re-establish his connection with the Lord. He was quick to seek forgiveness for anything that distanced him from God, and we should do the same.
The What-If That Changes Everything
What if this dry season is actually your invitation to discover a deeper intimacy with God? Just as Jesus withdrew to lonely places to pray (Luke 5:16), your current struggle might be drawing you toward a new and deeper level of relationship with the Lord – to hear from God, to see what God wants you to see, to pray as Holy Spirit leads.
Remember, the same God who heard Moses' stuttered prayers, and Hannah's silent tears, Hezekiah’s plea for God’s deliverance, Solomon’s Prayer for Wisdom,
is listening to you.
Romans 8:26 reminds us that when we don’t know what to pray, Holy Spirit intercedes on our behalf: “In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groanings too deep for words.”
Start TODAY
Today, take action. Instead of waiting to feel "spiritual enough" to pray, just show up. Open your heart, acknowledge any wrongdoing and call out to the Lord. Whether it's a simple "help" or a tearful "thank you," or "I praise You, Lord", God is there, ready to meet you exactly where you are. "Draw near to God, and God will draw near to you" (James 4:8).
What if tomorrow's powerful prayer life begins with today's simple "Dear Lord, here I am, I need You… or “Lord, I bring myself before you…” or “Lord, may I be sensitive to Your voice…” or "Lord, forgive me..."
What is one small step you can take today to rekindle your prayer life? Remember, spring always follows winter – your season of a renewed, power filled prayer life might be closer than you think.
Amen.
