Are You Walking in the Plumbline That God Has For Your Life?

Updated: Apr 19, 2021

We all have a different plumbline. My plumbline will be different to someone else’s.

What is a plumbline in the Bible?

It’s a measure of a believer being spiritually aligned with God’s will and purpose for their life, and walking in the right place and timing of where God wants them to be.

“I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line.” – Isaiah‬ ‭28:17‬

A personal plumbline is the measure of a person being aligned with exactly where they should be in their spiritual growth. For each person that measure will be different although the same principles of God’s Word apply to all of us.

So a plumbline, is for every believer to be in right standing with God to the measure that God gives them in line with the Word of God.

Religion or misalignment of our heart can blur our spiritual vision & hearing and pull us out of alignment with the plumbline God calls us to. It’s always important to stop and make sure we are hearing and seeing what God is showing us, so that we aren’t blurring the vision God has for our destiny.

Other things like roots of oppression, if left unhealed, can so easily drown out what God is saying. We must hear the voice of God through the Word, Holy Spirit and those God has put alongside us to guide us. God speaks in many ways to us.

When we become shortsighted and our spiritual hearing selective, it causes us to miss the timing and revelation of the LORD for our lives. This takes us out of alignment.

We must always do a spiritual check to ensure that we are not blocking out what God wants us to see & hear.

In other words, we mustn’t be ruled or led by ‘my will’ which is flesh if not submitted to God’s will; or allow any woundedness of emotions to cloud our judgement. We must be led by Holy Spirit.

Selective hearing and ‘blurry vision’ can set us in the wrong direction and in wrong alignments.

Be in agreement with the Word of God and the Spirit’s whisper, test what people are saying to you, with the Word of God. That’s your plumb line.

Here are 5 steps to guide you into right alignment with the plumbline that God has set in place for your life:

1. Hear what The LORD is saying to you. Let the Word and Spirit witness to you.

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise person who built their house on the rock.” Matthew‬ ‭7:24‬

2. To hear we have to set our minds on the LORD.

Our focus and priority must be to commune with GOD to hear from God accurately.

“…in EVERY situation, by PRAYER and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”- Philippians‬ ‭4:6-7‬

4. Then DO what God has instructed you to do.

‘Not my will Lord, but Your will.’ Jesus, in his prayer to The Lord in the garden of Gethsemane prayed, ‘ not my will but your will, God’. Jesus did nothing and said nothing that didn’t come from The Heavenly Parent, God.

5. Walk by faith, and you’ll walk in obedience.

Obedience comes out of FAITH (Rom 16:26). Your faith is increased by actually walking out your life by faith not by sight (physical vision), or circumstances.

This requires us to believe what God says above everything else, to determine walking in the right direction. To listen hear and do, we must be willing to obey all that God asks of us. ‬‬

Every argument your flesh gives you to not follow by faith what God instructs you to do the Scriptures teach that we must: take every thought captive and make it obedient to Christ.

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Cor.‬ ‭10:5‬

As we follow God’s Word, we are led by Holy Spirit into alignment and victory!
